[Funambol-developers] outlook redemption licensing question

My literal reading of the Outlook redemption license (which comes with the
outlook plugin) is that it can only be used for development purposes.[0]

Is it legal for me to use the free/open source version of the outlook plugin
in a production environment, with this unlicensed version of the redemption
library? Or, do I need to purchase the licensed version?

Also - is it possible to compile the outlook plugin without the redemption
code (in other words, using the regular api calls that will prompt the user to
confirm)?

Thanks for your help!

The open source version of the Plug-in is designed for personal use.
What do you mean exactly with "in a production environment" ? Are you
going to use it for commercial purpose?
In this case you'd better contact Funambol directly for a licensed version.

Outlook Plug-in imports the Redemption library and part of the code uses
Redemption calls to access Outlook data.
Now you cannot compile the plugin without the Redemption library
(without touching the code :) )

I am the systems administrator for a nonprofit organization with 30 employees.
I would like to install the Funambol outlook plugin on all of their computers
as part of a project to transfer their outlook data to Horde (and ease the
transition away from Outlook).

So - it's not exactly "personal" use - however, I'm also not re-packaging or
re-distributing or re-selling anything. So, I'm not sure if I'm breaking the
Redemption license.

Thanks for your answers and help!

Hi Jamie,

so you could ask direclty to the author of Redemption library, Dmitry
Streblechenko (***@dimastr.com).
He will let you know if you're breaking his license or not ;)
I'm adding Dmitry in cc.

Bye,
Andrea

Jamie,

If you are using Redemption for any business purposes, you need to purchase
a distributable version.

A single license will cover the whole company, no matter how many copies you
install.

Thank you!

Thanks for the response. I'm including the funambol list because I hope this
is useful for others - but if not just let me know and I will continue
privately with Dmitry.

I am happy to purchase the license - which brings me to another question for
the Funambol developers (and perhaps Dmitry as well): is there a way to
purchase the license from Dmitry and then re-package my own outlook funmabol
installer with the licensed copy of redemption?

I ask because I would like to deploy the outlook plugin automatically (I'm
using wpkg[0]) - however, the pop up redemption license warning makes that
impossible.

Thanks everyone for you help!

Hi Jamie,

yes, you can re-package the Outlook plugin using the licensed version of
Redemption.dll.
You have to download the latest source code of Outlook client, here:
http://download.forge.objectweb.org/sync4j/funambol-outlook-plugin-src-6.5.4.zip
then follow instructions to build the plugin:
https://wiki.objectweb.org/sync4j/Wiki.jsp?page=HowtobuildOutlookV65

Before building the installer, you just have to replace the
Redemption.dll file and then run "ant installer-dev" instead of "ant
release".
This means you will build the plugin with your local files. Let me know
if you need help :)

Bye,

Andrea
